Back From Halifax

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

Spent the week in Halifax working on the boat with my dad. It was wonderful! Of course, it is really hard to get all I want done everytime I go up, but dad and I tried our best.

We got another 1,000lbs of lead in the boat for a total 7,269lbs. Dad did the cut’n, I did the haul’n. I am going to cast this to see how much the resin will weigh and then probably add another 500 to 1,000lbs.

I did manage to get the hand rails on the plane for an extra $100, and both sets made it to Halifax without a problem. Amy and I had wrapped them well. We spent one afternoon placing the rails and marking them. Afterwhich, dad drilled all the holes in the cabintops while I went around on the inside of the boat and marked the bolt holes on the rails with a drill bit. We temporary put them on the boat for a photograph and will countersink the bolts at a later time.

Dad and I spend a lot of the week cutting stringers for the aft section of the boat. He would be down below marking down dimensions and I would be up top cutting the flat bar with an angle grinder with a zip disk mounted on. Ryan, the new welder who is working on my boat was top notch and we enjoyed working the week with him. Thanks Ryan.

We decided not to mount just yet the dorade vents that I brought. They should not be too difficult to put on and I felt like it would be better to wait to see how everything else got laid out. But speaking of vents, Dad and I did cut the vents for the engine room. Ryan started to weld them on on Thursday. Yea! I got a little ring of the tubing to make my mushroom caps for them.

On Friday we took a half day off and went down to Peggy’s Cove for a coffee and a short walk. The wind was really blowing when we arrived, so the sea was up, pounding agains the rocks. By the time we left, the wind died and the sunset became radiant. It was a great end to a great trip, thanks dad for all the hard work!

I am posting a few pictures of my dad working on the boat. Next week, I’ll post some more.

Handle Holes

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

Most of my week was spent preparing to head up to Halifax for the week. Amy and I packed a rollaway bag full of blocks and dorade vents. And we wrapped all the long deck hand rails in bubble wrap and put them in the 8ft long Goodwill sport gear bag.

My father is going to me meet me in Halifax tommorrow. Yea! We ended up buying a matching set of Dickies overalls, unfortunally, we couldn’t get ‘Tesha’ logos sewn on in time. Damn! But hey, I look more like a real boat builder now.

Ross did spent some time making another set of handles. Thanks Ross These are for the engine room hatch.

And since Carolynn wanted to harass me about playtime, yes, I did get out to go surf again this weekend. Thanks Hop and Liz. :)

Engine Room Hatch Top

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

The engine room hatch top was put on this weekend. Amy and I drilled, glued and screwed for 5 hours on Saturday afternoon and got the whole top put on. We had just enough Sikaflex Lot-291 for the job too. On Sunday, after the morning surf session with Hop and Liz, I plugged all the screw holes.

Amy and I also went by Goodwill this weekend and got a rollaway bag for the dorade vents and an 8ft long sportbag for the hand rails, all for $18. Going to try to take them up to Halifax with me next week.

Engine Room Hatch Slats

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

Amy and I spent a good part of the weekend cutting, shaping and routing the slats for the top of the engine room hatch at Hop and Liz’s place. That, and wake surfing. Anyway, as always, with Amy helping out things went really smoothly. We double checked all our cuts, all our routes and in the end, Amy sorted the slats to make the best pattern for the top. We also started a pair of handles for the side of the hatch and I may have come up with an easy way to secure the whole assembly to the deck. In all, a good weekend.

Also, the first of the shroud cleats came out of the linseed bucket and look particularly nice. And, on another note, it looks like my father maybe joining me up in Halifax for the week I’m there.

Thanks Amy. Thanks Hop and Liz.

Oak Insets

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

YachtSmiths added some supports to the dingy davits this past week. They have also been working on the sides of the steering box. Still have to figure out what to do for a top, but John the welder has some good ideas we went over on the phone. John has been also working on cleaning up the welds. Yea!

Amy and I got the oak engine room hatch insets installed. Had to route out a 1/4″ groove to set the plywood in place, then I painted over with a coat of epoxy to seal it. We also started soaking our shroud cleats.
