Propane Locker Floors

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

This was a relatively light weekend for working on the boat. The only task we wanted to get done was to make the floors for the propane lockers. The cleats came from left over mahogony. Actually we probably have enough stock for cleats for the entire boat, but that is another matter. Amy glued them in while I cut the floors out of .5″ marine plywood. Amy painted them with epoxy and that was that for the weekend. They fit nicely and we’ll glue them in permantly after we test fit the lockers on the deck.

In one of the pictures is Henry’s Optimist pram we are building on the side for his tender….

Scott Visit

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

My brother Scott flew in this weekend to work on his in-law’s boat hatch board. Yes, it was cheaper to fly here, buy the wood and build them in our garage that to have them done professionally in Tampa. Don and Carol (in-laws) have a beautifil Bristol 29.9 in St. Petersburg and Scott gave them new hatch boards for Xmas.

So while Scott was working the hatch boards, I worked the propane lockers. First business was to make a gig to route the sides in order to give them artifical seams and a bit more character. Gig worked great and with the “v” bit, the sides now look like they are composed of 4 boards edge glued together.

Next I cut the sides to fit the dimensions of the SketchUp model. After which Scott sanded down the insides and Amy tested the fit with locker edges/legs. Then came making the assembly gig which held everything true while we screwed. No glue at this time. The lockers look bigger than I had anticipated, so we’ll wait to test fit them on the schooner before we caulk them up.

Talked with Brian and Yachtsmits. Ryan has finished welding the water tanks and is almost done with fuel tanks.

HMS Surprise

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

Was in San Diego and then in Joshua Tree for the week with Angelo so I did not get a chance to work on the schooner. However, on the way to the airport to fly out we stopped by the HMS Surprise at the San Diego Maritime Museum. I did my usual run about the boat taking all the pictures I could. The shipped seemed oddly smaller than I had expected, but then again, what should I know, having never been on a replica of 200 year-old frigate. It was certainly cool though. The Star of India and a Russian WWII sub were also available to crawl through… which we did of course.

Glueing

Posted by: TBurnett    in Building Tesha

It’s been so cold here at night lately that the glueing of the propane locker sides have taken 2 full days to cure. Got 4 sides glued on Friday at noon, and got the others glued today. Wish I could have gotten more done because today the weather was beautiful. Worked all the hatch log design today as well. I had orginally roughly drawn them up about a year ago and finally today dimensioned them off and sent them to YachtSmiths. Hopefully Brian will have some ideas as well. I am not sure how hatch logs are made, but I did take a shot at it. Got the giamongous 55lb Delta anchor this week. Yay!
